W Hively - About Me

About Mr. Hively

I am a professional singer, organist, pianist, and conductor. Since 1985, I have been the music director at three churches, in Kensington, Newington, and New Britain. I grew up in Southington, and moved to New Britain in 1987. Since 1996, I have been the Minister of Music at First Lutheran Church of the Reformation in New Britain, where besides being the main worship planner and the director of the music series, I compose and arrange music for, accompany, and conduct, the choir and instrumental ensemble. I sing in Connecticut Choral Artists (CONCORA), an all-professional chorus that I joined in 1993. I belong to the American Choral Directors' Association; the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians; and the Greater Hartford Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
I was the piano and voice instructor for New Britain Parks and Recreation from 1994-2013. I also taught music and drama at Mooreland Hill School in Kensington. I have been the music instructor here at Sacred Heart School since 2010. It is difficult to imagine not having students.
I studied composition at Tanglewood. After high school, I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then, I earned my broadcaster's license at Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Farmington, studied conducting for five years, and studied voice for seven years. I am currently entering my sophomore year in the Pathway to Teaching Careers program at Tunxis Community College in Farmington; later, I will complete the B.A. in Music at CCSU, and pursue certification.
The chance to teach the children at Sacred Heart School came to me through my full-time ministry. I continue to view my role here as part resource, helping the homeroom teachers find music that makes it fun to learn the academic subjects: and part ministering to students by making musical discipline part of their intellectual make-up, introducing the vast diversity of world cultures, and above all giving students the words and music to sing their faith--both into their own hearts and those of the people with whom they share their love of Jesus.
I look forward to getting to know you and your student. I am available by phone at (860) 620-7280, or by calling the school office at (860) 229-7663 and asking for my extension, 304. You can also email me at
